Keep on the Borderlands and Beyond
We will be using the Basic & Expert Dungeons & Dragons rules produced in 1981. Enthusiasts commonly called this version of D&D "B/X" or "Moldvay edition (Tom Moldvay was the editor that approached Gary Gygax with the intention of simplifying the 1977 "Holmes" version of Basic, to attract younger or more inexperienced players to the hobby. Basic rules covered levels 1-3 while Expert covered 4-14. A "Companion" ruleset to take characters from 14-36 was planned but was eclipsed by the 1983 "Mentzer" Basic-Expert-Companion-Master and Immortal rules (BECMI). There is a fan made Companion rule book for B/X that we will adopt if the game gets into high level play. For now, Basic and Expert rules are all you need to be aware of.
The sets came as boxes and included the rulebooks, an adventure, polyhedral dice, a crayon (for inking the dice) and TSR promotional materials. You can still find original copies on eBay and you can also purchase PDFs on RPG.now. You will not need to own a copy if you do not wish to, as I will be providing a tailored 'Players Guide" to you that has removed the DM's materials from the books and just give you what you need to play. If you are unfamiliar with older versions of D&D, don't worry, you will find the rules to be similar to versions you have played, only more simplified for speed of play.
